Reclaiming Our Ways is an Indigenous Restorative Justice Program serving the Island Lake Region. The program provides a culturally grounded alternative to the traditional criminal court process by focusing on healing, accountability, and community wellness.
Our approach recognizes the root causes of conflict and works to address them in meaningful, respectful, and culturally appropriate ways. Participation is voluntary, and individuals must be willing to take responsibility for their actions while working toward positive change. Victims are also given a voice and supported in expressing how they have been impacted.
Our Mission
To provide a holistic, culturally rooted alternative to the traditional court system.
Our Objective
To help reduce recidivism and promote healing from the harm caused by offences.
Who We Serve
The program serves community members from:
- Garden Hill Anisininew Nation
- Red Sucker Lake Anisininew Nation
- Wasagamack Anisininew Nation
- St. Theresa Point Anisininew Nation
Individuals from outside the region may also be eligible to participate, as everyone deserves access to culturally grounded supports and restorative approaches to justice.
How Restorative Justice Works
The program offers an alternative to the criminal justice process by emphasizing:
- Healing and restoration
- Personal accountability
- Community involvement
- Victim participation
- Cultural teachings and traditional knowledge
When appropriate, individuals may be referred through the courts or law enforcement for diversion opportunities. Upon successful completion of a diversion agreement, the Crown may determine that charges are dismissed or stayed.
Indigenous Justice Strategy
Community Justice Workers
Community Justice Workers provide one-on-one support to victims, accused persons, and community members. They assist individuals referred through diversion programs and help guide participants through the restorative justice process.

AO Justice Committee
The AO Justice Committee consists of community members, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and Reclaiming Our Ways staff. The committee helps ensure the program remains culturally rooted, community-driven, and responsive to local needs. Their role is to ensure the voices of the people remain at the heart of every decision.

Honouring J.J. Harper
John Joseph (J.J.) Harper of Wasagamack Anisininew Nation was a respected leader, advocate, and former Executive Director of the Island Lake Tribal Council. His unjust death in 1988 helped spark the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry, leading to important discussions and recommendations addressing systemic racism and discrimination within the justice system.
Today, Indigenous Justice Day (J.J. Harper Day) serves as a day of remembrance, education, reflection, and reconciliation, honouring his legacy while recognizing the ongoing work needed to achieve justice and healing for Indigenous Peoples.
